My journey with discovering the world of wine began when I went to wine tasting in wine county, California in 2014. My first experience was with a friend of mine, where she graciously booked us on a private tour. The tour was phenomenal; a driver picked us up in San Francisco and drove us to several exclusive, reservation-only locations. Not only were we safely driven by Andrew Tours and Transportation, but every winery we visited was hospitable. Each wine offered paired with a food provided by the winery, who taught us so much about wine. My favorite stop was at Bell Wineries in Yountville, which to this day is my favorite winery in the United States for its ambiance, knowledge of personnel, and sense of freedom there. I visited a few times after the private tour and sometimes spent half the day there. Overall, the area is charming, with high-profile restaurants like The French Laundry within the city of Yountville.
My preferred wines are Brunello di Montalcino and Cabernet Sauvignon. For white wine, I like Sauvignon Blanc, who is Cabernet's parents' wine, along with Cabernet Franc. Lately I sip Prosecco and Champagne with my girlfriends, sometimes adding a tinge of St. Germaine or Limoncello to make it into a cocktail. Overall, red wine is my go-to, regardless of the season. When I drink red wine, I usually detect oak, dark fruit, leather, and/or tobacco notes, depending on the region and fermentation/harvest methods.
Outside of the United States, I absolutely adored Tenuta Torciano Winery in San Gimignano. Just wow. If you're a Brunello girlie like me, be sure to stop there when in Italy. You will also spend half the day there, but more so be in awe of the endless vineyards, the truffle olive oil, their balsamic. Everything they sell and allow customers to taste is outstanding. They do not pair your food with each wine you're trying, but every person gets their own charcuterie board. If you enjoy wine and have never done a taste before, wine tasting is something I recommend as an unforgettable experience with no regrets. Salute! - Mary Love
