The field hockey season has begun!
The field hockey season starts at the beginning of the school year, and the time is now! My first pre-season field hockey was just before the ninth grade in the early 2000s, when my hometown offered the sport to the girls entering high school. I describe my preseason experience in Chapter 17 of Borrowed Wings: A Memoir, where I mention the journey in achieving a starting varsity position.
Today, I still play field hockey. I did not play between my senior year of high school until my twenties, given that I had to catch up after getting left back twice in foster care, and my priority in my bachelor’s degree. All over the United States, luckily, there are adult recreation sports like field hockey that one can sign up for. For example, here in New Jersey, where I am from, there are several leagues under one company called Southern New Jersey’s Premier Adult Sport Leagues | PlayMore NJ
With that in mind, field hockey season is in full effect! If you play field hockey or sports like me, remember to hydrate for the event and post-recovery, stretch before and after, and listen to your body as you play. For me, it is a chance to take part in something I love in my free time, and it’s worth every drop of sweat from the game. As I always tell my friends, have fun and keep it light. Life is too short to wear everything so heavily!
